Ukrainian tennis star Dayana Yastremska has reported that her family's apartment in Odesa was devastated by a Russian missile strike. In a social media post, she described the destruction as a direct hit from a Kalibr cruise missile, sharing an image of the burning building where her home once stood.
Yastremska highlighted the tragedy by noting that the only item to survive the attack was her Roland Garros towel, a symbol of her connection to the sport. She posted a photo of the famous orange towel hanging from the wreckage, emphasizing the stark contrast between the survival of a piece of tennis memorabilia and the loss of her home.
The missile attack on Odesa and nearby Chornomorsk resulted in injuries to 37 individuals, including a baby, with two people reported missing. Yastremska's emotional response included a call to the Women’s Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation to recognize the impact of the conflict on athletes and their lives.
Currently ranked 113th in the world, Yastremska has previously reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and competed at the US Open this year. This incident is not isolated, as other Ukrainian athletes have also faced similar devastation due to the ongoing conflict that escalated in 2022.
