Alfie Hewett Claims Fifth US Open Title, Denies Oda Grand Slam Sweep

Alfie Hewett from Great Britain triumphed over Japan's Tokito Oda to win his fifth US Open men's wheelchair singles title, thwarting Oda's bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam in 2026. Hewett's victory came with a score of 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), marking a significant achievement in his career.

This win adds to Hewett's previous US Open titles, which he secured in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. The 28-year-old also celebrated a doubles title earlier in the tournament alongside fellow Briton Gordon Reid.

Hewett faced Oda earlier in the year at both the French Open and Wimbledon, suffering defeats in both finals. Reflecting on his earlier losses, Hewett expressed a desire to return to his fearless playing style, stating that he had spent time contemplating his approach after Wimbledon.

In the final match, Hewett showcased a dominant performance, particularly in the first set, where he saved a break point and finished with a powerful backhand return winner. The second set proved more challenging, but Hewett managed to recover from a double break down, ultimately winning in a tie-break.

Oda, who had been on a six-title Grand Slam winning streak, acknowledged Hewett's performance, stating that he deserved the victory. Despite his disappointment, Oda aimed for a clean sweep this year, making the loss particularly tough for him.
