Malaysia's Aidil Sholeh and Doubles Pair Reach Vietnam Open Semifinals

In a significant achievement for Malaysian badminton, Aidil Sholeh and the men's doubles duo of Choong Hon Jian and Wong Vin Sean have both secured spots in the semifinals of the 2026 Vietnam Open held in Ho Chi Minh City. Aidil triumphed in his quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Dong Tian Yao from China, winning in straight games with scores of 21-18 and 21-17.

The 26-year-old Aidil's victory, which took 42 minutes, marks his best performance of the season thus far. This win not only levels his career record against Dong at one win each but also sets him up for a semifinal clash against Japan's Minoru Koga, who advanced with a 22-20, 21-12 win over Vietnam's Nguyen Hai Dang.

Meanwhile, Choong and Wong delivered an impressive performance in their quarterfinal, defeating the Taiwanese pair of Cheng Kai Wen and Liao Chao Pang in just 27 minutes with a scoreline of 21-16, 21-8. Their semifinal match will be a challenging one, as they face the top-seeded team of Chen Zhi Ray and Lin Yu Chieh, who narrowly won their quarterfinal in three games.

Malaysia's mixed doubles team of Tan Zhi Yang and Teoh Mei Xing, however, could not advance further, losing to the top seeds Wu Guan Xun and Lee Chia Hsin in a closely contested match. Despite their elimination, the pair fought hard, pushing the match to three games before bowing out.

With Aidil and the men's doubles pair now just one win away from the finals, the upcoming semifinals will be crucial for Malaysia's hopes of clinching titles at this tournament.
