Lee Chong Wei Concerned for Lee Zii Jia Amid Ongoing Struggles

Malaysian badminton icon Lee Chong Wei has expressed his deep concern regarding the recent struggles of fellow player Lee Zii Jia on the international badminton scene. The three-time Olympic silver medalist finds it disheartening to witness a player of Zii Jia's caliber facing a prolonged downturn in performance.

As the chairman of the Badminton Association of Malaysia's Performance Committee, Lee Chong Wei believes that a more structured training environment, along with access to stronger sparring partners and a comprehensive support team, could be pivotal in helping Zii Jia regain his competitive edge. He emphasized that BAM remains open to discussions with the former All England champion if he seeks assistance in navigating the next phase of his career.

Lee Zii Jia, currently ranked No. 58 in the world, faced another setback recently at the Vietnam Open, where he was eliminated in the second round by Wu Zhe Ying of Chinese Taipei. This defeat was particularly disappointing for Lee as he had aimed to rebuild his confidence by participating in the Super 100 event.

Chong Wei noted that BAM has previously extended invitations to Zii Jia, including an opportunity to represent Malaysia at the Asian Games, which the player declined, citing a lack of readiness for major competition. Despite this, Chong Wei reiterated that BAM's door remains open for Zii Jia to discuss his future, emphasizing that the decision ultimately lies with the player.

Former Malaysian international Ong Ewe Hock also shared concerns about Zii Jia's current situation, suggesting that it is premature to consider retirement. He believes that with the right support and direction, Zii Jia still has the potential to compete at a high level for a few more years. Ong likened Zii Jia's current state to being adrift without guidance, highlighting the importance of mental resilience alongside technical skill.
