Cam Smith's Late Homer Lifts Astros Over Phillies 2-1

In a tightly contested matchup, Cam Smith's ninth-inning home run propelled the Houston Astros to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Smith connected on a first-pitch splitter from Phillies closer Josh Hader, sending the ball soaring over the right-center field wall for his 20th home run of the season.

Astros starter Cristian Javier was dominant early, not allowing a hit through the first four innings. Houston took an early lead in the second inning when Taylor Trammell hit an RBI double. However, the Phillies equalized in the fifth inning when Luis Arraez led off with a single, followed by Alec Bohm's double, and Bryson Stott's groundout drove in Arraez.

Javier concluded his outing with one run and three hits allowed over six innings, striking out five batters while walking one. The Astros' bullpen, featuring Bennett Sousa, Bryan Abreu, and Hader, combined for three hitless innings to maintain the lead.

With this victory, the Astros improved their record to 75-72, extending their lead in the American League West to 2.5 games over the Texas Rangers, who were set to face the Seattle Mariners later.

On the other hand, the Phillies fell to 82-65, now four games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East race. Despite the loss, Philadelphia holds a strong position for the top wild-card playoff spot, sitting 2.5 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs and six games ahead of the San Diego Padres.

The Phillies are set to face the Braves in a crucial three-game series this weekend, while the Astros will conclude their six-game road trip with a series against the AL-leading Tampa Bay Rays.
