Red Sox Pitcher Payton Tolle Records Immaculate Inning Against Royals

In a remarkable display of pitching, Payton Tolle of the Boston Red Sox opened his game against the Kansas City Royals with an immaculate inning, needing just nine pitches to retire the side. Tolle struck out Nick Loftin looking, followed by Bobby Witt Jr. and Jac Caglianone, who both went down swinging.

This achievement marks only the eighth immaculate inning in the history of the Red Sox franchise, according to Tim Healey of the Boston Globe. The last Red Sox pitcher to accomplish this feat was Chris Sale on August 26, 2021.

Immaculate innings are a rare occurrence in Major League Baseball, with only 124 recorded in the sport's history. While they are less common than no-hitters, the frequency of immaculate innings has increased in recent years as pitchers refine their skills and enhance their velocity.

Tolle's performance comes just two days after Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Justin Martinez also recorded an immaculate inning. In total, five such innings have occurred this season, including those by Michael Soroka of the Diamondbacks, Gavin Williams of the Cleveland Guardians, and Taj Bradley of the Minnesota Twins.
