Isao Harimoto, Baseball Icon and Atomic Bomb Survivor, Dies at 86

Isao Harimoto, a prominent figure in Japanese baseball and a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, has died at the age of 86 in Tokyo. Known as the 'Hit Machine', Harimoto holds the record for the most hits in Japanese baseball history, amassing a remarkable 3,085 hits over his 23-season career. He is the only player in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) history to surpass the 3,000-hit milestone.

In addition to his hitting prowess, Harimoto recorded 504 home runs and 319 stolen bases, making him the only player in NPB to achieve both 500 homers and 300 steals. This feat is shared by only three players in Major League Baseball: Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Alex Rodriguez.

Harimoto's illustrious career began with the Toei Flyers, where he played a crucial role in securing the team's first Japan Series title in 1962. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990. The Golden Players Club, one of Japan's two baseball halls of fame, expressed deep respect for Harimoto's achievements following his passing.

Born Jang Hun in Hiroshima in 1940 to Korean parents, Harimoto faced numerous challenges throughout his life. After suffering severe burns to his right hand in childhood, he adapted to become a left-handed player. Remarkably, he survived the atomic bomb that devastated Hiroshima in 1945, thanks to his mother's protective actions.

Harimoto's baseball journey began in 1959 with the Toei Flyers, where he played for 16 years before joining the Yomiuri Giants and the Lotte Orions. He won seven batting titles, including an impressive four consecutive titles from 1967 to 1970, a record later matched by Ichiro Suzuki. He retired in 1981 after a remarkable 2,752 games and later helped establish South Korea's KBO league before transitioning into a career in baseball commentary.
