New Bidder Emerges for Seattle NBA Expansion, Plans Arena in Marysville

BlackSun Private Equity has emerged as a second bidder in the race to bring an NBA team back to Seattle. The New York-based firm is collaborating with the Tulalip Tribes to develop a new arena on tribal-owned land, should their bid be successful.

The proposed arena would be located in Marysville, approximately 35 miles from Seattle, and aims to include an entertainment district. One of the significant challenges will be ensuring easy access for fans traveling from Seattle to Marysville, as well as garnering support from the local community.

Both ownership groups vying for the Seattle franchise have expressed their commitment to keeping the team in the Seattle area, following the relocation of the SuperSonics to Oklahoma City in 2008. The NBA is currently reviewing expansion bids for both Seattle and Las Vegas, with a decision anticipated by the end of the year.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has indicated that the league is prioritizing the Las Vegas bid, which is expected to be more lucrative, before finalizing the Seattle expansion. Reports suggest that the NBA is seeking bids of at least $7 billion for the new franchises, with the potential for delays if financial expectations are not met.
