Celebrating Doyle Alexander's Impact on Baseball

Doyle Alexander, a notable figure in baseball history, celebrates his birthday today. The former pitcher spent four seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, achieving a record of 46 wins and 26 losses while maintaining a 3.56 ERA over 106 games, primarily as a starter.

Alexander was signed by the Blue Jays as a free agent in June 1983, shortly after his release from the New York Yankees. After a challenging stint with the Yankees, where he posted a 0-2 record and a 6.35 ERA, he found success in Toronto, finishing his first season with a 7-8 record and a 3.93 ERA.

His standout year came in 1984 when he recorded a remarkable 17-6 record and a 3.13 ERA, earning some MVP votes along the way. Alexander played a pivotal role in the Blue Jays' first playoff appearance in 1985, finishing with a 17-10 record, although he struggled in the postseason with an 8.71 ERA across two starts.

Midway through the 1986 season, Alexander was traded to the Atlanta Braves, and later to the Detroit Tigers, where he continued to make an impact. He concluded his career with a record of 194-174 and a 3.74 ERA, known for his skillful pitching rather than overpowering speed.

Despite his contributions, Alexander did not receive any votes on the Hall of Fame ballot, a surprising outcome for a player of his caliber. Today also marks the birthdays of former players Brian Simmons and Matt DeWitt, who were part of the infamous Mike Sirotka trade in 2001.
