Amen Thompson Signs Five-Year, $208 Million Extension with Rockets

The Houston Rockets have reached an agreement with Amen Thompson on a substantial five-year contract extension valued at $208 million. This deal, reported by Shams Charania of ESPN and confirmed by additional sources, includes a 10% trade kicker.

This extension is beneficial for both Thompson and the Rockets. The contract, which averages $41.5 million annually, provides Thompson with significant financial security starting next season. For Houston, locking in Thompson at a rate below the potential maximum of $252 million allows for greater financial flexibility moving forward.

Thompson's defensive prowess has been a key aspect of his value, having placed in the top 10 for Defensive Player of the Year voting for the past two seasons and earning First Team All-Defense honors two years ago. Last season, he led the NBA in total minutes played, showcasing his durability and importance to the team.

Offensively, with Fred VanVleet sidelined for the season, Thompson stepped up, averaging a career-high 18.3 points, along with 7.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. His performance contributed to a +6.6 net rating during his time on the court. With VanVleet's return, Thompson is expected to shift back to a secondary creator role, where he can continue to excel.

Thompson becomes the second player from the 2023 draft class to secure a rookie extension after three seasons, joining Victor Wembanyama. He will earn $12.3 million this season as he completes the final year of his rookie contract before the new extension takes effect.
