Sabalenka Begins US Open Title Defense with First-Round Win

Aryna Sabalenka kicked off her campaign for a historic third consecutive US Open title with a solid victory over Camila Osorio in the first round. The two-time defending champion faced a challenging match but ultimately secured a 6-2, 6-4 win at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Despite experiencing a dip in form recently, Sabalenka's performance showcased her determination. Earlier in the season, she reached the Australian Open final and won both the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments, but her recent early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon have put her world number one ranking in jeopardy.

With only a narrow lead over Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, who is just 434 points behind, Sabalenka must defend 2,000 points at this tournament to maintain her top spot. Home favorites Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff also have the potential to claim the number one ranking if they perform well in the tournament.

In her match against Osorio, Sabalenka started strong, dominating the first set. However, she encountered difficulties in the second set, struggling with her serve and committing several unforced errors. Nevertheless, she managed to fend off break points and clinched the match after one hour and 28 minutes.

If Sabalenka can secure her third US Open title, she would join the ranks of Serena Williams and Chris Evert as the only women to achieve this feat in the Open era. However, she will need to elevate her game to navigate the challenging draw ahead.
