Rockies Rookie Cole Carrigg Benched After Incident with Braves Fans

The Colorado Rockies have decided to bench rookie Cole Carrigg after he made an inappropriate gesture toward fans during a recent game against the Atlanta Braves. The incident occurred in the eighth inning of a tightly contested match, which the Braves ultimately won 2-1.

Carrigg, who was playing center field, attempted a diving catch on a line drive hit by Michael Harris II. Although he put forth a strong effort, the ball eluded him and resulted in a two-run double that shifted the game's momentum in favor of Atlanta. Following the play, Carrigg reacted to comments from Braves fans by giving them the middle finger, a moment captured by television cameras.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer addressed the situation on Sunday, stating that Carrigg's actions were unacceptable and did not reflect the values of the organization. "Cole made a mistake he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization and that we don’t stand for that," Schaeffer said. He added that Carrigg would sit out for a couple of days as a consequence of his behavior.

In response to the benching, Carrigg expressed regret for his actions, apologizing to his teammates and the organization. He acknowledged the passion of the fans but recognized that his response was inappropriate. "That’s inexcusable on my part," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to giving his all for the team.

Despite the setback, Carrigg has been a bright spot for the Rockies this season, showcasing his skills with a .263 batting average, six home runs, and 36 RBIs in 67 games since his call-up.
