Ty Simpson Emerges as Strong Contender for Rams Backup Quarterback Role

Rookie Ty Simpson has made a compelling case to serve as Matthew Stafford's backup, potentially edging out Stetson Bennett.

In a recent preseason game against the Chargers, Simpson showcased his growth, completing 18 of 23 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown while improving his average depth of target from 4.80 to 6.1 yards. Overall, Simpson finished the preseason with a completion rate of 78%, totaling 382 yards and three touchdowns without any turnovers, yielding a passer rating of 109.9.

While Simpson's performance has garnered positive attention, questions remain regarding his ability to throw deep and maintain efficiency under more aggressive offensive demands. Nonetheless, his high floor and low mistake rate have impressed many fans, suggesting he could be a reliable option moving forward.

The Rams' running back situation appears more settled, with Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, and Ronnie Rivers likely securing roster spots. This leaves little room for Dean Connors, who had a solid outing with 69 rushing yards and a touchdown, but may ultimately be a casualty of roster numbers.
