Jonathan Kuminga Joins Timberwolves on Two-Year Deal

Jonathan Kuminga has officially signed a two-year contract worth $12.4 million with the Minnesota Timberwolves, as confirmed by his agent to ESPN. The deal includes a player option for the second year, providing Kuminga with flexibility in the future.

Previously a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Kuminga became a free agent after the team declined his $24.3 million option. Although the Los Angeles Lakers showed interest and proposed a three-year deal, their salary cap constraints complicated the acquisition.

In Minnesota, Kuminga is expected to play a significant role alongside star guard Anthony Edwards and newly acquired LaMelo Ball. This opportunity marks a shift for Kuminga, who has started only 24 games over the past two seasons, as he seeks to enhance his contributions on the court.

At 23 years old, Kuminga enters his sixth NBA season, bringing valuable experience despite his youth. His performance this season could set the stage for a more lucrative contract next offseason, should he choose to decline his player option for 2027-28 and enter unrestricted free agency.

While Kuminga's perimeter shooting has been a concern—he hit only 33.3% of his three-point attempts last season—his new team boasts strong defensive players like Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert, who can help mitigate his defensive weaknesses. Kuminga averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in the previous season, and the Timberwolves are hoping he can step up in his new role.
