
Fearnley and Others One Step Closer to US Open Main Draw
19 days agoBritish tennis players Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Harry Wendelken, and Harriet Dart have advanced to the brink of securing spots in the main draw of the US Open, following their victories in the second round of qualifying matches held in New York.
Fearnley, currently ranked 100th in the world, showcased his determination by defeating French player Luka Pavlovic in a tightly contested three-set match, winning 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4. He will next face Austria's Jurij Rodionov.
Samuel, aiming for his first US Open appearance, came back from a set down to beat fellow Briton Billy Harris, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. He will now challenge former top-20 player Cristian Garin from Chile.
Wendelken, ranked 196th, saved a match point in a grueling three-hour match against Switzerland's Remy Bertola. He rallied from a set and 5-2 down to ultimately win 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, and will meet Lithuania's Vilius Gaubas in the next round.
Dart also had to overcome a deficit, coming back to defeat American teenager Kristina Penickova with a score of 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. She is set to face either fellow Briton Heather Watson or Spain's Angela Fita Boluda in her next match.
Additionally, Fran Jones and Katie Swan are looking to progress further as they prepare for their upcoming qualifying matches. In contrast, Jack Pinnington Jones was eliminated after a close match against Finland's Otto Virtanen.
