D-backs' Lovullo Apologizes to Cubs' Counsell Over Sign-Stealing Incident

In a recent turn of events, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo admitted to making a mistake regarding a sign-stealing incident involving the Chicago Cubs. Lovullo contacted Cubs manager Craig Counsell to express his regret and acknowledge that the Diamondbacks were incorrect in their accusations.

The situation arose during a game when Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly noticed Cubs third-base coach Quintin Berry relaying his pitches to Chicago batters. This led to a heated exchange between the two dugouts, with both teams' coaches engaging in a confrontation.

After consulting with MLB senior vice president of on-field operations Michael Hill, Lovullo learned that Berry's actions were within the rules. He clarified that coaches can legally relay signs from their designated coaching boxes, prompting his apology to Counsell.

Lovullo stated, "I thought it was supposed to be kept between the white lines," emphasizing the importance of adhering to the game's regulations. He acknowledged that the Cubs were operating correctly and that he had misjudged the situation.

Despite the controversy, the game ended poorly for the Diamondbacks, who suffered a 7-0 defeat. Kelly, reflecting on the incident, noted that while stealing signs is a longstanding tradition in baseball, he believes it should be limited to players on the field rather than coaches. He expressed his intent to improve and avoid giving away signals in the future.
