Future of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik as Permanent Pair to Be Decided Post-Asian Games

In Kuala Lumpur, the future of Malaysian badminton stars Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik remains uncertain as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) plans to evaluate their partnership after the upcoming Asian Games. The duo recently showcased their potential by reaching the final of the 2026 BWF World Championships, where they secured a silver medal.

Rexy Mainaky, the national doubles coaching director, indicated that the BAM will hold off on making any long-term decisions regarding Aaron and Soh until after the Asian Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya. Despite their impressive performance in New Delhi, the BAM is committed to assessing various combinations in men's doubles before finalizing the pairings for future competitions, including the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Aaron and Soh's reunion at the World Championships came after a temporary separation during a reshuffle of the national team. Their return to the court together proved fruitful, culminating in a notable semifinal victory over South Korea's top-ranked pair, Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae. However, they fell short in the final against China's Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who claimed the title.

As the Asian Games approach, Aaron is expected to compete alongside Tee Kai Wun, a partnership that will be closely monitored as they face some of the strongest men’s doubles teams globally. This tournament will serve as a critical test for the BAM's experimental pairings and could influence the decision on whether to solidify Aaron and Soh's partnership moving forward.
