Orioles Minor League Recap: Witherspoon Shines Despite Offensive Struggles

The Orioles' minor league affiliates experienced a challenging evening, losing all four games on the schedule. Despite the defeats, there were notable performances, particularly from pitcher Kyson Witherspoon, who delivered an impressive hitless outing.

In the matchup between the Baysox and Richmond, a promising 2-1 lead evaporated in the eighth inning due to a three-run rally from the Flying Squirrels. Starter Patrick Reilly, recently returned from Tommy John surgery, showcased his skills by allowing just one run over five innings, striking out six batters. However, the Baysox offense struggled, managing only five hits, with Wehiwa Aloy contributing two of them.

The Keys faced the Blue Rocks in a doubleheader that ended in disappointment, as Wilmington secured a walk-off victory in the seventh inning. Kyson Witherspoon, who joined the organization in the Adley Rutschman trade, pitched five hitless innings, striking out eight. Unfortunately, the Keys' offense was stagnant, collecting only three hits and failing to capitalize on six walks, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Keys again struggled offensively, recording only two hits and failing to score effectively despite drawing seven walks. Stephen Still struck out eight in four innings but was charged with the loss after allowing two runs, both driven in by Jacob Walsh, who was instrumental in the Blue Rocks' scoring.

The Shorebirds also faced offensive woes, being shut out by Crawdads pitchers despite racking up eight hits, all singles. Esteban Mejia had a promising outing, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, as the Shorebirds continue to work on his control issues. Overall, the night was marked by strong individual pitching performances overshadowed by a lack of offensive production across the board.
