Cris Cyborg's Title Not on the Line After Opponent Misses Weight
23 days agoCris Cyborg's upcoming fight in Tampa, Florida, has taken an unexpected turn as her opponent, Ketlen Vieira, missed the weight limit by a significant margin. Vieira weighed in at 152 pounds for their scheduled 145-pound bout, leading to the decision that Cyborg's featherweight title will not be contested.
Initially, the fight faced the possibility of cancellation, but after negotiations, it was confirmed that the bout will proceed as a catchweight match. Cyborg, who successfully made the weight, expressed her relief on social media, stating, "We don’t care. Porrada."
Cyborg, a veteran of the sport with a career spanning over two decades, hinted that this fight could be her last. She reflected on the situation, noting her concern when she learned of Vieira's weight issue, but was pleased that the fight would continue. "I think they were going to cancel the fight and everything, but there was a conversation to make sure the fight wouldn’t get cancelled," she said.
Vieira, who has a history of competing in the bantamweight division, attributed her weight miss to a health issue that arose during her weight cut. She explained that she experienced severe kidney and stomach pain, which prevented her from continuing to lose weight. As a result, she will forfeit part of her purse due to the weight discrepancy.
