Marc Stad Takes Control of Timberwolves Ownership from Marc Lore

Marc Stad is set to become the controlling owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, purchasing the stake from Marc Lore, who will be stepping back from his role. This transition, valued at $4.5 billion, was first reported by Shams Charania of ESPN and has been confirmed by various sources in Minnesota.

Previously a minority investor in the ownership group alongside Lore and Alex Rodriguez, Stad's acquisition effectively swaps his position with Lore's. Rodriguez will increase his stake and continue to serve as the public face of the ownership group, remaining actively involved with both the Timberwolves and the WNBA's Lynx.

Elisa Stad, Marc's wife, is expected to take on the role of team governor, leveraging her corporate executive experience in consumer branding. This change in ownership is not anticipated to disrupt ongoing plans for the franchise, including efforts to secure a new arena in the Twin Cities, nor will it lead to significant alterations in basketball operations.

Lore's decision to sell comes after a successful tenure where he made notable changes, such as improving relations with franchise legend Kevin Garnett and enhancing the team's roster. The Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals in consecutive seasons under his leadership. Lore will now focus on his food delivery business, Wonder, which is undergoing a public IPO process.

Although the sale requires approval from the Board of Governors, Stad's previous vetting as a minority owner suggests that this will be a formality, allowing the ownership transition to proceed smoothly.
