Jacob deGrom Reaches 2,000 Strikeouts in Record Time

Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom reached a significant career milestone on Thursday night, striking out his 2,000th batter in a game against the Washington Nationals. DeGrom accomplished this feat in just 1,661 innings, making him the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,000 strikeouts, trailing only Chris Sale, who did it in 1,626 innings in 2019.

The milestone strikeout came early in the game as DeGrom fanned Abimelec Ortiz with a slider, marking his 2,000th strikeout in his 272nd career game. This puts him ahead of notable pitchers like Yu Darvish, who reached the mark in 1,697⅓ innings, and Pedro Martinez, who did so in 1,711⅓ innings, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

DeGrom's journey to this achievement has not been without challenges. He began his college career as a shortstop before transitioning to pitching and was drafted in 2010 after only two years on the mound. His professional debut was hampered by a significant elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the entire 2011 season. He finally made his MLB debut shortly before turning 26.

Despite facing injuries throughout his career, DeGrom enjoyed a dominant stretch from 2017 to 2019, consistently making 31 or more starts each season and posting an impressive 2.53 ERA over 622⅓ innings. However, injuries have plagued him in recent years, culminating in another Tommy John surgery in June 2023, which has limited his appearances since 2021.
