US Open Sets Record with $108 Million Prize Fund for 2026
25 days agoThe US Open is set to make history with its prize fund for 2026, offering a total of $108 million (£79.2 million), which marks a significant 20% increase from the previous year. This increase reflects the tournament's commitment to enhancing player compensation at all levels.
Champions in the singles categories will earn $5.5 million (£4.03 million) each, representing a 10% rise compared to 2025. Additionally, first-round players will receive $140,000 (£102,667), which is $30,000 more than last year, translating to a 27% increase.
A portion of the prize pool includes a $2 million (£1.47 million) contribution to a welfare fund, a move that has been advocated by top players across Grand Slam events. In response to player demands, the four major tournaments have also announced the establishment of a Grand Slam Player Council to address player concerns more effectively.
The US Tennis Association (USTA) has not yet released its financial statements for 2025, but projections suggest that the prize money aligns with player expectations based on anticipated revenue growth. USTA Chief Executive Craig Tiley described the increased funding as a significant step towards ongoing investment in athletes.
In addition to the singles prize money, mixed doubles participants will see increased rewards, with first-round payouts doubled. The USTA is also the first Grand Slam to allocate funds specifically for player support, which will be managed in an independent account while details are finalized.
The Grand Slam Player Council is set to launch after the US Open, aiming to enhance player input on various issues, including prize money distribution, in future tournaments.
