Aryna Sabalenka's preparations for defending her US Open title have taken a significant hit following a surprising defeat to Sara Bejlek in the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open. The top-seeded Belarusian initially led 5-1 in the first-set tiebreak and held a 4-1 advantage in the second set, but Bejlek mounted a comeback to win 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.

This loss puts Sabalenka's position as world number one in jeopardy, especially with Elena Rybakina poised to take over the top ranking if she reaches the Cincinnati final. Sabalenka, who aims to become the first woman since Serena Williams to win three consecutive US Open titles, has struggled in her lead-up to the tournament, suffering early exits in both Cincinnati and Toronto.

Since her impressive "Sunshine Double" victories at Indian Wells and Miami earlier this year, Sabalenka has only reached one semi-final, which she lost to Jessica Pegula in Berlin. In contrast, Bejlek, ranked 35th in the world, achieved a notable milestone by defeating a top-10 opponent for the first time and advancing to a WTA 1000 quarter-final.
