James Harden Signs Three-Year, $97 Million Extension with Cavaliers

James Harden has officially signed a three-year contract extension worth $97 million with the Cleveland Cavaliers, following his decision to opt out of a $42.3 million deal for the current season. This move was part of a strategy to provide the Cavaliers' front office with additional cap space to enhance the team’s roster.

The extension includes a player option for the third year, during which Harden will be 39 years old, along with a 15% trade kicker. This agreement comes after Harden's impactful performance with the Cavaliers last season, where he averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists per game, contributing significantly to the team's run to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Cleveland acquired Harden during last season's trade deadline, seeking a veteran presence to bolster their backcourt alongside Darius Garland. Despite his strong regular-season numbers, Harden faced challenges during the playoffs, prompting the Cavaliers to consider further roster improvements, including the recent addition of wing Peyton Watson.
