Cavs Acquire Peyton Watson in Sign-and-Trade Deal
26 days agoThe Cleveland Cavaliers have finalized a sign-and-trade agreement to acquire Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets. In exchange, the Cavs will send Max Strus, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, Tre Mann, cash, and a second-round pick to Denver, marking a significant move for the franchise.
Watson, a 6'8" wing, is coming off a breakout season where he averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 54 games. His scoring improved notably from the previous year, largely due to his development as a shooter. He recorded a 41.1% shooting percentage from beyond the arc during the regular season and excelled in the playoffs with a 36.8% rate, including a remarkable 52% from the corner, placing him in the 97th percentile.
Defensively, Watson has shown versatility and effectiveness, able to guard multiple positions thanks to his size and athleticism. This skill set is expected to complement the Cavs' frontcourt, which features standout players Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley.
As part of the deal, Watson will sign a four-year contract worth $88 million, which includes a player option. Strus, who was a key player for the Cavs over the past three seasons, will reunite with Darius Garland on the Los Angeles Clippers after averaging 11 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists during his tenure in Cleveland.
The trade comes as the Cavaliers continue their search for a long-term solution at the starting forward position, a quest that has seen them explore various options in recent years. With Watson's arrival, the franchise hopes to solidify their lineup moving forward.
