Cavaliers Acquire Peyton Watson in Four-Team Trade with Clippers

The Cleveland Cavaliers have finalized a significant four-team trade that will see Peyton Watson join the team from the Denver Nuggets. In exchange, the Cavaliers will send Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers, according to sources familiar with the deal.

Watson, a restricted free agent who has spent his first four seasons in the NBA with the Nuggets, is set to sign a four-year contract worth $88 million with Cleveland. This contract includes a player option and a trade kicker, enhancing his value to the Cavaliers.

As part of the trade, Cleveland will also send an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 and a second-round pick in 2032, acquired from the Sacramento Kings, to the Nuggets. Additionally, Denver will receive Julian Reese from the Washington Wizards. The Cavaliers will gain a second-round pick from the Clippers, which will subsequently be sent to Washington.

The 23-year-old Watson had a breakout season last year, starting a career-high 40 games and averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His addition comes as the Cavaliers look to strengthen their roster following LeBron James' decision to sign with Philadelphia.

Cleveland's roster adjustments have been ongoing, as they also explored options with free agents like DeMar DeRozan and Jonathan Kuminga. With Dean Wade departing for Philadelphia, the Cavaliers aim to solidify their small forward position after Strus' injury-plagued season, where he missed the majority of games due to a broken foot. Despite his struggles, Strus made impactful contributions during the playoffs, helping the Cavaliers reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018.
