Nick Kyrgios Faces Provisional Suspension After Cocaine Test

Nick Kyrgios, the Australian tennis player and former world number 13, is currently facing a provisional suspension from the sport following a positive test for cocaine. The sample was collected during the Mallorca Open on June 22, revealing the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced that Kyrgios has been suspended since August 4. Although he has the option to appeal the suspension, he has not yet taken that step. Under the terms of his suspension, Kyrgios is barred from participating in or attending any Grand Slam events or tournaments sanctioned by the ATP and WTA until a tribunal reviews his case.

In a recent Instagram post, Kyrgios acknowledged his mistake and expressed remorse, stating he takes full responsibility for his actions. He emphasized the toll that injuries have taken on him in recent years, which he believes has affected his mental and physical well-being. If found guilty, Kyrgios faces a potential ban of up to four years; however, if he can demonstrate that the drug was taken outside of competition, the maximum penalty could be reduced to three months. Kyrgios has expressed his disappointment in himself and apologized to his fans, family, and sponsors, particularly emphasizing the impact of his actions on younger fans who look up to him.
