NBA Investigates Clippers and Kawhi Leonard for Potential Salary-Cap Violations

The NBA's investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers and star player Kawhi Leonard is ongoing, with the league examining potential salary-cap violations. The inquiry, which began in September 2025, has gained renewed attention following recent developments surrounding Leonard's trade.

Initially, Leonard joined the Clippers on a three-year, $103 million deal after leaving the Toronto Raptors. His signing coincided with the acquisition of Paul George, positioning the Clippers as strong contenders in the Western Conference. However, reports surfaced that Leonard's camp, specifically his uncle Dennis Robertson, allegedly sought impermissible benefits during his free agency negotiations.

These requests reportedly included part ownership of a team, a private plane, housing, and guaranteed endorsement money, all of which would violate the league's collective bargaining agreement. Although the NBA investigated whether the Clippers fulfilled any of these requests, no evidence was found to support that claim.

The investigation took a new turn when journalist Pablo Torre accused the Clippers of using a sponsor to pay Leonard for 'no-show jobs' as a means to bypass the salary cap. This arrangement, allegedly involving a company funded by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, raised significant concerns about compliance with league regulations.

As the investigation continues, the Clippers' plans for the upcoming season are in limbo, particularly with Leonard's recent trade discussions. The league's scrutiny reflects a broader effort to enforce rules regarding player contracts and team finances.
