Braves Struggle Against Fastballs Since Early August

The Atlanta Braves have encountered a notable downturn in their ability to hit fastballs since August 3. Currently, the team ranks at the bottom of the league in several offensive categories, including wOBA and on-base percentage against fastballs, and is second-worst in batting average. This sharp decline contrasts with their performance prior to August 3, where they were positioned much higher in these metrics.

The struggles have been particularly pronounced among left-handed hitters, who have experienced a significant drop in xwOBA and slugging percentage. Players such as Drake Baldwin, Ozzie Albies, and Jim Jarvis have been particularly affected, while Matt Olson continues to perform well. Michael Harris has also seen a decline but remains above his expected output, and Mike Yastrzemski has contributed positively.

Right-handed hitters are also feeling the pressure, though not as severely. Their xwOBA remains relatively stable, but a decrease in on-base percentage suggests they are becoming more aggressive and potentially chasing pitches outside the zone. This trend is concerning for the Braves as they need to address these issues promptly.

Since the trade deadline, the Braves have been seeing more pitches in the strike zone, ranking eleventh in that category, compared to twenty-ninth before. This shift indicates that opposing pitchers are targeting the Braves more aggressively, sensing an opportunity to exploit their recent struggles.
