Mark Walter's Brief Lakers Tenure Highlights Record Sale Uncertainty
30 days agoMark Walter's potential sale of the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion has drawn attention not only for its staggering price but also for the brevity of his ownership tenure. If the sale receives the necessary approval, Walter's time as owner would rank among the shortest in the histories of major U.S. sports leagues, with just 289 days logged as of mid-August.
A review by USA TODAY identified only four completed ownership tenures shorter than Walter's. The record for the shortest tenure is held by Lou Mitchell, who owned a stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers for just 31 days in 1980 before selling to Joe Zingale, who then sold to Ted Stepien 22 days later. Other notably brief tenures include John P. Harris of the Boston Doves and William D. Cox of the Philadelphia Phillies, who faced a tumultuous end to his ownership due to a ban from baseball.
Walter's current ownership period is still subject to extension, as the sale awaits league approval. Recent NBA ownership transactions have varied significantly in terms of approval timelines. Walter's acquisition of the Lakers took 134 days to finalize, while the sale of the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 was completed in just 28 days. This inconsistency adds further uncertainty to Walter's record-setting sale.
