Court Rules Against Charles Oakley in Assault Case Against MSG

In a significant legal decision, Judge Richard J. Sullivan of the Southern District of New York has ruled against former New York Knicks player Charles Oakley in his ongoing dispute with Madison Square Garden (MSG). The case stems from a 2017 incident where Oakley was arrested after an altercation with security during a game.

Initially, Oakley filed multiple claims against MSG, but most were dismissed in February 2020. Following an appeal, only his assault-and-battery claim remained. However, the judge found that Oakley did not provide sufficient evidence to support his allegations of being assaulted by MSG security personnel.

MSG presented video evidence and witness testimonies indicating that Oakley was not assaulted, leading the judge to conclude that he had a reasonable opportunity to leave the venue but chose to engage in physical confrontation instead. Sullivan noted that the evidence showed Oakley was not pushed to the ground and that no reasonable jury could determine that he was at risk of wrongful physical contact.

In response to the ruling, MSG criticized Oakley's legal team, stating that they have pursued unfounded claims for years. The organization announced plans to take legal action against Oakley's attorney, Douglas Wigdor, for what they described as frivolous litigation.

Despite his past as a beloved Knicks forward, Oakley has remained absent from MSG during the team's recent playoff appearances. Wigdor expressed disappointment with the ruling, emphasizing the belief that conflicting accounts warrant a jury's consideration of the case. He remains hopeful that the Second Circuit will allow for a jury trial.
