Jack Draper Falls in First Round of Cincinnati Open

Jack Draper faced a disappointing exit in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, losing in straight sets to Spain's Martin Landaluce. Draper, who was ranked as high as fourth in the world last summer, was unable to capitalize on a promising lead in the second set, where he was ahead 5-2.

Despite the early advantage, Draper squandered six set points, allowing the 20-year-old Landaluce to rally and secure five consecutive games, ultimately winning the match 6-3, 7-5. Draper struggled throughout the match, finishing with a staggering 47 unforced errors and 12 double faults.

This match marked Draper's return to competition after a lengthy injury layoff, having only played one match since June. A persistent arm injury has seen his ranking drop to 143rd, with his last significant performance resulting in a loss to Terence Atmane at the Canadian Open.

Draper has been dealing with the repercussions of a shoulder injury sustained at the US Open last August, which has led to bone bruising and multiple withdrawals from tournaments, including Wimbledon and the Washington Open this summer. Although he did not appear to be physically hindered during the match against Landaluce, he seemed to lose confidence as the match progressed.

In an effort to address his ongoing injury issues, Draper has sought the expertise of biomechanics specialist Carlos Cano, who has previously assisted other players in overcoming similar challenges.
