Giants Acquire Shay Whitcomb from Waivers

The San Francisco Giants have made a roster move by claiming infielder Shay Whitcomb off waivers from the Houston Astros. Whitcomb, a right-handed player, was originally selected by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft.

At 27 years old, Whitcomb has shown flashes of potential, particularly noted for his combination of speed and power. However, his performance at the Major League level has been less than stellar, as he has recorded a batting average of just .167 with a .216 on-base percentage and a .292 slugging percentage across 102 plate appearances.

Despite a promising debut season in 2024, Whitcomb's recent statistics indicate a decline. Over the past two seasons, he has struggled significantly, managing only seven hits in 56 at-bats, including three home runs, while striking out 21 times. His minor league performance has also dipped, with a wRC+ of 97 this season, down from a 134 wRC+ in AAA last year.

Whitcomb's versatility is a key asset; he has played every position except pitcher and catcher in the minors, primarily at shortstop, third base, and catcher. This adaptability could provide valuable depth for the Giants, especially with injuries affecting players like Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt, as well as Willie Adames.

For the time being, Whitcomb will join the Sacramento River Cats to adjust to the Pacific Coast League, but he is expected to be called up to the Giants in the coming weeks.
