The trophy, which weighs 12.5 kilograms and stands 60 centimeters tall, was unveiled in Petaling Jaya. Crafted by hand from premium-grade brass and mounted on a solid teakwood base, its design embodies the essence of Chong Wei's illustrious career, emphasizing qualities such as determination and resilience.
Chong Wei expressed his desire to give back to the badminton community that supported him throughout his career. He stated that the tournament is a personal dream and an opportunity to help young athletes develop their skills and compete at higher levels.
The Lee Chong Wei Cup will feature competitions across three youth age divisions and will include all five major badminton disciplines. This format is designed to provide young players with valuable tournament experience and the chance to showcase their talents.
In addition to the financial incentives, the tournament aims to create a competitive environment that can identify and nurture potential players for national and international badminton. The event will adopt a best-of-three, 15-point scoring system, introducing a new dynamic to the matches.
Chong Wei, who has a storied career including 349 weeks as world No. 1 and three Olympic silver medals, hopes this initiative will inspire young players to pursue excellence in badminton. The tournament is scheduled to take place from August 29 to September 6, 2026.
