Ellis Sets Stolen Base Record for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

Tim Ellis has etched his name into the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' history by becoming the franchise's all-time leader in stolen bases. His 83rd career steal surpassed the previous record of 82 held by Nick Punto, which was set between 2001 and 2003. Ellis has since increased his total to 85 steals in just 156 games with the team.

Currently, Ellis ranks second in the International League with 43 stolen bases this season, just behind Braiden Ward of the Worcester Red Sox, who has 51. He is on the verge of breaking the single-season stolen base record of 44, established by Tommy Barrett during the franchise's inaugural season in 1989. Ellis is only one steal away from tying this mark.

Ellis expressed pride in his baserunning skills, emphasizing that his achievements contribute to team success rather than personal accolades. He noted the importance of getting into scoring position to facilitate runs for his teammates. His connection to the franchise runs deep, as his father, Robert Ellis, also played for the Red Barons and threw a no-hitter in 2004.

Describing the nuances of stealing bases, Ellis likens stealing second base to checkers, while taking third is akin to chess, requiring a keen understanding of the game. He acknowledged the added difficulty of pinch-running situations, where the defense anticipates his intent to steal.

In his six seasons in the minor leagues, Ellis has accumulated 223 stolen bases with a success rate that reflects his skill. He has also made brief appearances in Major League Baseball, where he has successfully stolen five bases without being caught. This season, he is batting .237 with the RailRiders, contributing significantly to the team's efforts.
