Cardinals Weighing Innings Limits for Starting Pitchers

The St. Louis Cardinals have recently returned to a .500 record, aided by a series against the Colorado Rockies and the performance of pitcher Kyle Leahy. However, Leahy's early exit after just five innings in his latest start, despite throwing only 82 pitches, has sparked discussions about potential innings limits for the team's starting rotation.

According to reports, Leahy is currently under some form of innings restriction in his inaugural season as a starter. He has pitched 112.1 innings this year, ranking third on the team behind Andre Pallante and Michael McGreevy, who are also nearing the mid-100s in innings. Both Pallante and McGreevy have previously exceeded 150 innings in a season, suggesting they may not require similar limitations this year.

The situation has intensified following a disappointing outing by Matthew Liberatore, who now holds a 5.15 ERA and a 5-9 record. With 113.2 innings pitched, there are calls for him to transition to the bullpen to manage his workload more effectively. Meanwhile, Quinn Mathews has emerged as a potential candidate to fill a rotation spot due to Liberatore's struggles.

Leahy's performance has been commendable, as he has matched or surpassed Pallante in several statistical categories, although he trails in wins and ERA. The Cardinals are attempting to develop homegrown talent for their rotation rather than seeking external options, and Leahy's durability has been notable, with no injuries reported throughout his professional career.

As the Cardinals assess their roster, the question arises: who could step in if Leahy's innings are limited? Brycen Mautz has been effective as a relief pitcher, while other prospects like Jurrangelo Cijtnje and Pete Hansen may not yet be ready for a big league call-up. Tekoah Roby and Cooper Hjerpe are also on the mend, with Hjerpe potentially being a candidate for a relief role as he progresses through rehab. For now, the team may need to consider bullpen games or utilizing an opener strategy to manage their pitching depth.
