Padres Claim Series Split Against Diamondbacks with 5-1 Victory

The San Diego Padres managed to split their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, winning 5-1 and leveling their season series at five victories apiece. The Padres' bullpen played a crucial role in the victory, effectively shutting down the Diamondbacks' offense throughout the game.

Kohl Drake struggled on the mound for the Diamondbacks, failing to generate swings and misses against the Padres lineup. He pitched only 3 2/3 innings, needing 80 pitches to do so, and despite giving up three runs, he was aided by solid defensive plays in the outfield that prevented further damage.

Phillip Abner also faced challenges, throwing 52 pitches over three innings. Manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged that Abner's pitch count was likely above his limit, but his ability to provide extra outs helped the bullpen prepare for an upcoming series against the Dodgers.

Arizona's offense was limited, managing just one run in the third inning from an RBI single by Gabi Moreno, who recorded three hits in the game. Although the Diamondbacks loaded the bases later in the inning, they failed to capitalize, with Nolan Arenado flying out to end the threat. Tim Tawa added a single in the fourth, but the team struggled to generate further offense, with their next hit coming only in the eighth inning.

Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a pivotal weekend series, hoping for a strong rebound from pitcher Merrill Kelly. Following the series split, Arizona maintains a slim one-game lead over the Padres for the final wild card spot, with three more games against San Diego remaining in the season.
