Kawhi Leonard's Alleged Sponsorship Deal with Daktronics Under Investigation
39 days agoRecent reports indicate that Kawhi Leonard may have been involved in another questionable sponsorship arrangement, this time with Daktronics, the manufacturer of the Clippers' new scoreboard at the Intuit Dome. This follows an investigation into a similar deal with the now-defunct sustainability company, Aspiration.
According to Pablo Torre's findings, Daktronics allegedly entered into a multimillion-dollar contract with Leonard, despite him reportedly not fulfilling any promotional duties. Two unnamed sources, including a former high-ranking Clippers official, suggested that the deal was perceived as a method to circumvent the NBA's salary cap regulations.
The sources claimed that employees within the Clippers organization joked about the nature of the deal, indicating it was essentially a way to funnel funds from the team to Leonard through Daktronics. Notably, Daktronics is not known for celebrity endorsements, raising further questions about the legitimacy of the arrangement.
The investigation has drawn attention to Daktronics' financial struggles in 2023, coinciding with their work on the Clippers' video board. The company has also engaged a crisis communications firm with ties to former Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling and current owner Steve Ballmer.
The NBA, led by Commissioner Adam Silver, is currently examining the situation involving Leonard, Ballmer, and the Clippers. While the league hopes to resolve the matter before the upcoming season, reports suggest that a resolution may not be reached until 2027 if a settlement is not agreed upon. The Clippers have consistently denied any wrongdoing in this ongoing saga.
