Yankees Make Minor Moves at Trade Deadline, Fail to Address Key Needs
42 days agoThe New York Yankees made a couple of notable moves at the trade deadline, acquiring outfielder García and infielder Ramos to enhance their offense. García, who leads the National League in slugging, was brought in from Washington in exchange for a package of minor league pitchers, including prospects Jack Cebert and Ben Grable. This addition is expected to provide much-needed support for fellow slugger Ben Rice in the batting order.
However, the Yankees face a dilemma with García's defensive role, as he primarily plays first base, a position already occupied by Rice and veteran Paul Goldschmidt. While Goldschmidt has had a strong start to the season, he is expected to see reduced playing time as García steps in at first base, with Rice transitioning to designated hitter. The return of Giancarlo Stanton adds further uncertainty to the lineup, as the team cannot rely on his immediate impact after a lengthy absence due to injury.
In addition to García, the Yankees acquired Ramos, who has shown promise against left-handed pitching, boasting a 127 wRC+ this season. At just 26 years old, Ramos will enter arbitration for the first time in 2027, providing the Yankees with a controllable asset for the future. However, the cost of acquiring him was steep, as the Yankees parted with their No. 5 prospect Henry Lalane and 13th-ranked prospect Kaeden Kent, raising questions about the long-term impact of these trades.
Despite these additions, the Yankees fell short in addressing critical needs at catcher and in the bullpen. General Manager Brian Cashman had been under pressure to find help in these areas but ultimately made no moves. While the bullpen has improved with the emergence of Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick, the team will need to rely on internal options as they move forward. The lack of significant upgrades leaves the Yankees in a precarious position as they aim to stay competitive amidst injuries to key players.
