Angels Designate Former All-Star Jorge Soler for Assignment

The Los Angeles Angels have officially designated Jorge Soler for assignment, a move that takes the former All-Star off their 40-man roster. Following this decision, the Angels have a seven-day window to either release him, trade him, or place him on waivers. This transaction comes just a day after the MLB trade deadline.

Soler, who is 34 years old, gained recognition as the World Series MVP in 2021 while playing for the Atlanta Braves, where he hit three home runs in the championship series against the Houston Astros. After his time with the Braves, he spent two seasons with the Miami Marlins and was selected as an All-Star in 2023.

In 2024, Soler played for both the Braves and the San Francisco Giants before being traded to the Angels. He is currently in the final year of a three-year, $42 million contract he signed with the Giants.

Despite his past accolades, Soler has struggled at the plate this season, posting a slash line of .203/.291/.273 over 86 games. Nonetheless, he has managed to hit 12 home runs and drive in 49 runs. Primarily serving as a designated hitter this year, Soler has seen a decline in his offensive production.

With 215 career home runs and valuable postseason experience, Soler may attract interest from contending teams looking to bolster their rosters. However, whether teams will consider taking on his salary remains uncertain, given his recent performance. The Angels currently sit at the bottom of the AL West with a record of 43-69.
