Athletics Sign Max McGwire, Son of MLB Legend Mark McGwire, to Minor League Deal

The Oakland Athletics have officially signed Max McGwire, the son of former MLB star and Athletics legend Mark McGwire, to a minor league contract. Max, a right-handed pitcher, has been assigned to the ACL Athletics, the team's affiliate in the Arizona Complex League.

At 23 years old, Max McGwire is exploring dual roles within the organization, potentially serving as both a power-hitting option and a first baseman. His baseball journey began at Oklahoma in 2022, before he transferred to San Diego and ultimately finished his college career at Saint Louis University, where he pitched in 12 games during the 2026 season.

Mark McGwire, a 12-time All-Star, played for the Athletics from 1986 to 1997 and was a key figure in the franchise's history. He was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1987 and had a standout career before transitioning into coaching roles, including a position as a special assistant to player development with the A's in 2026.

Max's brother, Mason McGwire, is also making strides in professional baseball, currently playing in the Chicago Cubs' farm system. The McGwire family, known for their affinity for names starting with 'M', continues to make its mark in the sport.
