Wizards' Jamir Watkins Suffers ACL Tear, Set for Extended Recovery

Jamir Watkins, the Washington Wizards' second-round pick from the 2025 NBA Draft, is facing a lengthy recovery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The injury occurred during a summer league game against the Utah Jazz, where Watkins slipped and immediately clutched his knee. Despite the injury, he managed to play for 20 minutes before being sidelined for the remainder of the summer league.

The 25-year-old wing is signed to a two-way contract, which would have allowed him to alternate between the Wizards and their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go. While there is a possibility of returning to the court within 6 to 9 months, experts suggest that full recovery and regaining strength could take up to a year.

Although Watkins was not projected to be a key player in the Wizards' rotation this season, he brought valuable defensive skills and energy whenever he played. Last season, he demonstrated potential as a rookie, achieving a Player Production Average (PPA) of 63, which, while below the league average, was the highest among the team's rookies.

Watkins excelled in defensive metrics, showing above-average performance in steals and blocks per possession. He also averaged 9.0 rebounds per 100 possessions, indicating his effectiveness on the boards. However, to secure a more prominent role upon his return, he will need to improve his shooting, having recorded a 29.7% success rate from three-point range last season, and reduce his fouling, which averaged 6.0 fouls per 100 possessions.
