Nova Widianto Departs BAM to Rejoin PBSI as Mixed Doubles Coach

Nova Widianto, the head coach of Malaysia’s national mixed doubles badminton team, is set to conclude his tenure with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on July 31. After more than three years in the role, he will return to the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to lead their mixed doubles program starting in August.

Widianto's decision to leave BAM comes after receiving an offer from PBSI, coupled with personal encouragement from his family, particularly his mother, to return home. His family believed that this opportunity would allow him to continue his coaching career closer to them.

Joining BAM in January 2023, Widianto was tasked with enhancing Malaysia's mixed doubles performance, which had been seeking more consistent results on the international stage. Under his guidance, the program saw significant improvements, including the historic achievement of Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, who became the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to win the BWF World Championships.

In a farewell statement, Widianto expressed gratitude to BAM for the opportunity to be part of Malaysia’s badminton scene, emphasizing the honor it was to work with the players and coaching staff. He also wished BAM continued success in the future, acknowledging the support he received during his time in Malaysia.

BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz thanked Widianto for his dedication and professionalism, recognizing his pivotal role in strengthening the mixed doubles department and elevating the players' international standing. Rexy Mainaky, BAM's doubles coaching director, noted that Widianto's departure would be felt within the organization, highlighting the close collaboration they had during his tenure.
