Sixers Navigate Financial Tightrope After Major Player Acquisitions

The Philadelphia 76ers have made significant moves this offseason, acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George, along with two first-round and two second-round draft picks. Shortly after, the team signed LeBron James to a two-year veteran-minimum contract worth $7.9 million, marking a notable addition to their roster.

In addition to LeBron, the Sixers utilized their non-taxpayer mid-level exception to sign Dean Wade for $9 million and Anfernee Simons for $6 million. They also secured Ariel Hukporti on a one-year deal for $3.4 million. These transactions have pushed the Sixers to a hard cap of $209 million, effective until June 30, 2027, restricting their payroll flexibility.

LeBron's contract, being a two-year deal, will not be prorated, meaning his full salary will impact the team's salary cap, complicating their financial situation. Prior to his signing, the Sixers were already close to the hard cap and had to waive Dalen Terry, whose $2.6 million contract was fully non-guaranteed, to create the necessary space.

To further bolster their roster, the Sixers are expected to sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope after the Memphis Grizzlies plan to waive him. KCP's one-year deal at $3.9 million will also be prorated, but the Sixers had to trade Johni Broome and a 2027 second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash considerations to accommodate this signing.

Currently, the Sixers have 14 players under contract and are approximately $1.8 million below the first apron. This leaves them without the capacity to sign additional players unless they pursue undrafted free agents or two-way contracts. They may opt to keep an open roster spot until the trade deadline to evaluate potential additions as the season progresses.

While the team could consider waiving Jabari Walker for more roster flexibility, doing so would incur additional costs. As teams increasingly push the limits of their hard caps, the Sixers will need to navigate their financial landscape with caution as they prepare for the upcoming season.
