Competing under sweltering conditions, with temperatures soaring to 34°C, Alexandrova collapsed on the court and was forced to retire from the match.
The Russian player, who was the top seed in the tournament, was engaged in a closely contested battle against 16-year-old Kristina Liutova. At the time of her collapse, Alexandrova was trailing 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 5-4. The match had already extended beyond three hours when the incident occurred.
Initially, the match was paused as Alexandrova attempted to continue playing. However, she received a time violation for taking too long to serve due to her struggles. Unfortunately, during the next point, she fell to the ground and required immediate medical assistance.
While Alexandrova was able to stand afterward, she ultimately had to forfeit the match, granting Liutova her first victory on the WTA tour. The young player was visibly emotional following the chaotic turn of events.
