Spencer Jones Discusses Offer Sheet Match with Nuggets

Spencer Jones recently shared insights on his decision to sign a fully guaranteed two-year, $12 million offer sheet with the Oklahoma City Thunder, a move that the Denver Nuggets ultimately matched. This decision has sparked mixed reactions among Nuggets fans, who were initially displeased with Jones' choice to engage with a rival team.

In a post on LinkedIn, Jones emphasized the business aspect of professional basketball, stating, "This is a business. Front offices treat it that way every day and players have to do the same." He clarified that his priorities during free agency included finding a team that aligned with his skill set, had a championship culture, and was an organization he believed in, noting that both Denver and Oklahoma City met those criteria.

Jones also pointed out that signing the offer sheet allowed him to secure a favorable situation regardless of whether the Nuggets chose to match it. He made history by signing the largest fully guaranteed offer sheet for an undrafted player coming off a two-way contract, a significant milestone in his career.

After joining the Nuggets in 2024 on a two-way deal, Jones had a modest rookie season but showed considerable improvement in his second year. He started 37 of 64 games and led the league with an impressive 69.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc during the playoffs, averaging 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in the regular season.

While the match keeps Jones in Denver, it also pushes the Nuggets into the second apron under the current collective bargaining agreement. His $12 million contract will increase the team's projected tax penalty significantly, nearly doubling it from $36 million to $68 million, according to ESPN.
