João "koala" Pfeffer, currently ranked #15 in HLTV Prospects, has carved a distinctive path in the competitive Counter-Strike scene. Unlike many players who are introduced to gaming through family or in major urban centers, koala's journey began in Tucuruí, a small municipality in Brazil's Pará state, where he faced numerous hurdles to pursue his esports dreams.

From a young age, koala was captivated by gaming, often spending hours in an internet cafe watching others play. His mother initially prevented him from gaming, but after persistent requests, she gifted him a computer for his seventh birthday. This marked the beginning of his gaming journey, although he initially played offline against bots on the cs_assault map.

Years later, a trip to a theme park reignited his passion for Counter-Strike when he discovered CS:GO on a friend's computer. After just two matches, he was hooked and knew he had to get the game for himself. His nickname, koala, stems from a stock photo he found on his computer, rather than any resemblance to the animal.

Despite the challenges of living in a region with poor internet infrastructure, which often resulted in high ping during the day, koala adapted by playing late at night. He recalls waking up at midnight to play for hours, maximizing his limited opportunities. His dedication paid off as he quickly climbed the ranks on GamersClub, reaching the highest level by his early teens.

At 14, after achieving significant milestones in his gaming career, koala made the decision to pursue esports professionally. His journey has been marked by resilience and determination, as he continues to represent Brazil as one of its most promising young talents in the world of Counter-Strike.
