Chou Tien Chen Claims Historic China Open Title at 36

Chou Tien Chen has etched another remarkable achievement in his badminton career by clinching the 2026 China Open men’s singles title. The 36-year-old from Chinese Taipei triumphed over France’s Toma Junior Popov, winning with scores of 21-15, 7-21, 21-13 in a thrilling final at the BWF World Tour Super 1000 event.

At the age of 36 years and 199 days, Chou became the oldest player to win a Super 1000 title. This victory marks his first championship of the season and his first at this level since he won the Indonesia Open in 2019. Chou entered the final with strong momentum, having previously defeated world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi and compatriot Lin Chun-Yi.

The match began with Chou taking control, utilizing his defensive skills and precise shot placement to secure the first game. However, Popov responded vigorously in the second game, increasing his attacking pace and forcing Chou into a more reactive position, which allowed the French player to equalize the match.

In the deciding game, Chou regained his composure and quickly established a lead, showcasing his experience and tactical acumen. He closed out the match with a score of 21-13, solidifying his place in badminton history as the first Taiwan-born player to win the men’s singles title at the China Open.

Chou expressed his disbelief at reaching the final and winning the championship, attributing his success to his support team and their efforts to improve his performance following an earlier defeat at the Japan Open. He emphasized that his longevity in the sport is a result of daily discipline rather than any single training method.
