Cavaliers Sign Croatian Forward Mario Hezonja to One-Year Deal

The Cleveland Cavaliers have secured their first free agency signing of the summer by inking Croatian forward Mario Hezonja to a one-year contract valued at $2.8 million. The announcement was made by ESPN's Shams Charania, marking a strategic addition for the team as they look to bolster their roster.

Hezonja, who stands at 6'8”, was originally selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Over five seasons in the NBA, he played with the Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, averaging 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. After the 2019-20 season, Hezonja transitioned to playing professionally in Europe, where he has spent the last six years, most recently with Real Madrid.

During his time in Europe, Hezonja had a standout season in Liga Endesa, Spain's premier basketball league, averaging 17.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, which earned him MVP honors. However, his performance in the EuroLeague was less impressive, posting averages of 13.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.

Hezonja is known for his strong outside shooting ability, making him a valuable asset on offense. His size and scoring versatility allow him to penetrate defenses effectively, particularly when defenders focus on his perimeter shooting. Despite his offensive strengths, Hezonja's defensive capabilities have been questioned, as he is not recognized for his prowess on that end of the court.
