Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan Advance to China Open Quarterfinals

In Changzhou, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan emerged as Malaysia's last representatives at the China Open, successfully advancing to the quarterfinals following a straight-game victory in the women's doubles round of 16. The duo overcame Ukraine's Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr with scores of 21-19, 21-12 in a match that lasted around 30 minutes.

The victory came amidst a challenging day for Malaysian badminton, with six out of seven players eliminated in their second-round matches. Notable exits included Man Wei Chong and Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, and Leong Jun Hao, among others.

In contrast, Chinese players had a strong showing, with world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi advancing after an opponent's retirement. Other Chinese players, including Weng Hong Yang and Chen Yu Fei, also secured their spots in the quarterfinals.

Pearly and Thinaah faced a tough challenge from Buhrova and Kantemyr, who kept the first game closely contested. However, the Malaysian pair showcased their composure in the final rallies to clinch the first game. They then increased their intensity in the second game, leading to a decisive victory.

Next, Pearly and Thinaah will meet Japan's fourth-seeded pair, Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto, who advanced after defeating their compatriots Hinata Suzuki and Nao Yamakita. The upcoming match will test the Malaysian pair's ability to maintain their aggressive play against a seasoned Japanese duo.

In other matches, Thailand's Benyapa and Nuntakarn Aimsaard pulled off a significant upset by defeating South Korea's sixth seeds, while Malaysia's new men's doubles team of Man Wei Chong and Soh Wooi Yik faced elimination, marking a disappointing day for the national men's doubles partnerships.
